foldings 2

acrylic on canvas / fibreboard
148 panels, each 20 x 20 cm
2024

Like foldings 1 this series investigates the creation of a multitude of forms through the folding of a square along predefined axes by following a rule set that was established in advance. It differs from the previous series by focussing on the generated shapes and their orientations, axes and negative space are of no visual importance.

This is the set of rules:

  1. Take a geometric shape and divide its perimeter into five equal parts.
  2. Each division point can be connected to another on a different contour line to form an axis.
  3. Create two axes, with both axes having a maximum of one common point.
  4. Permute all possible combinations of axes.
  5. Fold the left part of the geometric shape upwards along the first axis, looking from the starting point to the endpoint.
  6. Fold the left part of the geometric shape, and possibly the previously folded shape, upwards along the second axis, looking from the starting point to the endpoint.
  7. Fold all possible combinations.
  8. Transform each of the foldings into a painting, keep the orientation of the created shape defined by the folding process.

Here is the graphical summary of all shapes generated by the above described system. There will be silkskreen prints available, soon.
